The newly appointed panel of Copyright Act Committee is facing a turmoil as panel member Aamir Khan has resigned from the committee after an ugly war of words with lyricist Javed Akhtar.
During the meeting, Aamir Khan said that lyricist don’t contribute much towards the success of a song and only star actors make the song superhit.
Reacting to Aamir’s statement, Javed Akhtar said, “Your first big song was ‘Papa Kehte Hain’. Did it make you a star or did you make that song run?”
Aamir still defended his statement and “When Aamir again insisted that it’s the star who makes a bigger contribution to a song becoming a hit, Javed replied, ‘Your so-called contribution is nothing but interference. We lyricists would be eternally grateful if you keep your so-called contribution to yourself. We manage to do good work not because of, but in spite of your contribution.’”
However when Aamir reacted that, more than a lyricist , a writer contributes more to a movie, Javed replied back , “Good for Chetan Bhagat”. referring to the 3 Idiot’s Chetan Bhagat controversy.
Talking about the meeting, an insider says, “at one point during the meeting things got totally out of hand when Aamir made a statement saying that if his movie 3 Idiots was making say 10 crores why should a Swanand Kirkire and Shantanu Moitra get 50 per cent of that. So to that Javedsaab said it was because they deserved it and they were the ones creating it. To that Aamir retorted it was all their inputs that made the composers churn out what they did.”
Discussing more details about the meeting, the insider says, “Javedsaab had written Lagaan’s hit song chale chalo. When that song was being written it seems Aamir had asked for the phrase ‘nasha’ to be included at the start but Javedsaab had none of it. And they both as well as the others present there knew the song became a super hit. In fact Aamir didn’t know how to respond when Javedsaab told him that if he thought the musicians and writers were such frivolous people that only made hit songs on his direction then why doesn’t he make a film without any songs and music!”
In the heat of the current event, Aamir sent his resignation to HRD minister Kapil Sibal and wrote, I cannot make any meaningful contribution in this atmosphere. Aggression of this type leaves me feeling very disillusioned and sad and I am unable to function.”
