Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey - Movie Review

Cast :: Abhishek Bachchan , Deepika Padukone

Adapting a work of literature into a movie is an arduous task. Satyajit Ray's 'Apu Trilogy' [PATHER PANCHALI, APARAJITO and APUR SANSAR] was based on two Bengali novels written by Bibhuthibhushan Bandopadhyay. Ray's SHATRANJ KE KHILADI was based on Munshi Premchand's short story of the same name. In fact, film-makers have always been fascinated by best-selling books/novels for adapting into feature films. Mira Nair's THE NAMESAKE, P.C. Barua, Bimal Roy and Sanjay Leela Bhansali's DEVDAS, Pradeep Sarkar's PARINEETA, Rajkumar Hirani's 3 IDIOTS, Atul Agnihotri's HELLO and the recent AISHA have been adapted from literary works. Even in Hollywood, LORD OF THE RINGS, HARRY POTTER, NARNIA and many more have been successfully adapted from novels by reputed names.

However, if you analyze the past, you will realize that not all movies adapted from novels/short stories have set the cash registers jingling at the box-office. Films like PINJAR, PAHELI, RAINCOAT and international experiments like BRIDE AND PREJUDICE and THE MISTRESS OF SPICES have found very few takers in the past.

This is not the first time Ashutosh Gowariker has adapted a book into a film. KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY is yet another book-to-movie adaptation by this talented storyteller [this one is based on the book 'Do And Die: The Chittagong Uprising 1930-34' by Manini Chatterjee]. Again, this is not the first time Ashutosh Gowariker has revisited the bygone era. He did it successfully in LAGAAN [period], then JODHAA AKBAR [historical] and now KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY [period].

Recreating the bygone era is indeed demanding, laborious and strenuous. It's a challenge to present the era convincingly. Besides extensive detailing to lend authenticity, the director carries the responsibility of making the characters come alive to the present-day generation. Gowariker has successfully done that in the past and does it successfully yet again in KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY.

Once the film-maker takes on the task of depicting a chapter from history, it's imperative that he/she remains factual to the depiction of the revolution, giving an accurate account of what actually transpired in that period. But details alone won't help, it needs to be well dramatized for the big screen. There's a vast difference in the style novels are written, but one needs to take extra care to make it film friendly. While I may not be able to comment on whether Gowariker has been faithful to the book or tampered with it or implemented some changes, which may be necessary to suit the tastes of the present-day spectators and make it more palatable, I would definitely like to say that what comes across on screen is very absorbing, truly informative and exceptionally inspiring.

Final word? The expectations from KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY are minimal, but you can't overlook the fact that it's a genuinely honest effort that needs to be encouraged and appreciated. I would like to add here that the promotional posters/billboards/promos don't create any impact whatsoever. Wish the makers would've looked into this very important aspect as well!

1930, British India: In the province of undivided Bengal lies the sleepy, peaceful port of Chittagong. In this unassuming little town, a revolution is about to begin; a revolution which will forever wake all of Chittagong and inspire the entire nation.

April 18. 1 night. 5 simultaneous attacks. A band of 64 - 56 innocent yet fearless young boys, 5 defiant revolutionaries, 2 determined young women, and an idealistic leader [Surjya Sen], a school teacher by profession.

This group of 64 represents a little-known chapter in history; a forgotten night that reigned terror on the British through a series of calculated attacks. This is a true story of these forgotten heroes and the narrative takes us through every step of the action from the initial trepidation, to the thrill of the attack, to the underground movement, daring escapes and tragic captures, and most importantly, their undying legacy.

A film-maker of extensive aptitude and sensitivity, Gowariker's tryst with period films continues. Seems like he has worked himself to the grind in order to attain perfection. The writing [screenplay: Raoul V. Randolf and Ashutosh Gowariker] and execution of the material are so credible that it influences you to wonder if the writers and director were part of the revolution. The Bengali ethos and the behavioral patterns of the characters, recreating the etiquette and body language of people who lived in a different era along with their attire and styling and also their dwellings come across as very pragmatic. In fact, Gowariker has left no stone unturned to make a film that does justice to the event.

KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY has almost entirely been shot in Goa and not Chittagong [now Bangladesh] because the location that was there in the 1930s no longer exists in that shape, I understand. However, the film captures the spirit and intensity to perfection. On the other hand, with Gowariker's films, the length/running time of the film is always a topic of discussion and that's a problem with KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY as well. The film has a running time of approx. 2.48 hours and the editor [Dilip Deo] and director could've easily trimmed a few fight sequences in the second half, to make the goings-on crisper.

Musically, KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY is embellished with soft and soothing compositions, but I have an issue with that. Sure, the album is high on patriotic sentiment, but the songs in the first hour act as a roadblock in the narrative. Ideally, it should've been a songless film. However, the background score [also by Sohail Sen] enhances every scene, making it more impactful. The production design [Nitin Chandrakant Desai] transports you to that era. It's that authentic. The stunts [Ravi Dewan] are true to life. Kiran Deohans and Seetha Sandhiri's cinematography captures the era to perfection.

Abhishek as Surjya Sen suits the character right. His character appears very fervent, but at the same time truly tranquil, incredibly unperturbed and really unruffled, which merges very well with the character of an educationalist that he illustrates. A freedom fighter with these attributes hasn't been presented in a motion picture before. Abhishek gets to the character a certain authority. The rebelliousness and boisterousness are depicted to perfection.

Deepika sheds her glam look and looks every bit the character she illustrates. Kudos to her first of all for accepting a challenging role [of a woman revolutionary of the 1930s] so early in her career and then almost living that character in the film, continuing to prove her mettle far ahead of her poise and exquisiteness.

Sikander Kher leaves a terrific impression. He excels in several scenes. Vishakha Singh is a complete natural. She catches one's attention instantly. Samrat Mukerji, Maninder and Feroz Wahid Khan, each actor is earnest and sincere to the core. In fact, every actor in the film looks most convincing in their respective parts. I would like to make a special mention of the young artists [most of them seem like first-time performers], who have a very unpolluted/uninfluenced approach to acting. Brownie points to each one of them.

On the whole, KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY, based on the Chittagong rebellion, is an enlightening experience of a poignant, but little-known chapter in history. It's a film of immense significance which evokes a colossal patriotic fervor. A motion picture like KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY isn't created targeting the box-office solely. It's also made for the gratification of the senses. And that it does in sufficient measure. In an industry obsessed by opening weekend business and box-office records, this is one of those rare films that doesn't compromise on its gracious objectives for the sake of becoming more box-office friendly. At the same time, a film like KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY, although very well made, may not appeal to those who relish the customary kitsch and masala. Therefore, the film will have to rely on a very strong word of mouth to create any kind of an impression or impact at the box-office.

Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey - Music Review

Cast :: Abhishek Bachchan , Deepika Padukone

There are good expectations from the music of Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey. After all Ashutosh Gowariker has been an accomplished film maker and when it comes to films that bring with them a sense of patriotism (Lagaan, Swades), the music has always been a highlight. He may have moved on from A.R. Rahman to Sohail Sen but the latter's compositions in What's Your Raashee? had proved that the replacement was not a bad idea at all. Now that Ashu has entrusted Sohail to create a much bigger (and relatively serious) soundtrack in the form of Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey, one hears the album with keen interest to know if the man manages to deliver.

First things first - Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey takes time to sink in. Music here is not bad by any means but it is not instant coffee that hooks on to audience in the very first listening. In fact one has to give the album a hearing - once, twice, thrice - and it is only then that the songs start registering themselves. This is what is evidenced in 'Yeh Des Hai Mera' which reminds one of the namesake tracks in Swades. However, the mood, treatment and setting of the song is totally different here as the revolutionaries get together to see that light at the end of the tunnel. Sung by Sohail Sen himself, this soft sounding number has a distinct Rahman touch to it and gives the album an expected start.

There is some fun immediately after with 'Naiyn Tere' following the same route as SD Burman's 'Dheere Se Jaana Bagiyan Mein'. This one is far peppier though and has a sweet innocent feel to it that makes you fall in love with it instantly. In the times when beats have taken over the proceedings, the world is dancing to the tune of 'Munni Badnaam' and rock is becoming an integral part of Bollywood compositions, 'Naiyan Tere' is like a whiff of fresh air. Credit must also go to Pamela Jain and Ranjini Jose who get the flavour of the first half of 20th century bang on and remind one of the eras gone by. 'Sad version' of the same song also arrives later in the album. This time around, the song is mainly hummed with instrumentals and chorus adding on the appeal.

What one was waiting for till now was an anthem song though and one finally gets to hear it in the form of the title song 'Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey'. Taking one back to the days of Lagaan, this anthem track comes with just the right kind of energy, pace, exuberance and styling that establishes loud and clear that one would hear this piece multiple times in the film's narrative. Following Rahman approach, right from the manner in which it is tuned to orchestrated, 'Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey' - which is a kids chorus sung quite effectively by members of Suresh Wadkar Ajivasan Music Academy - should find audience for itself.

If you liked 'Naiyan Tere', rest assured you would play on 'Sapne Saloney' repeatedly as well. A love song about the protagonist promising his beloved all the dreams to eventually come true, provided he first attains what he has set out for in life, 'Sapne Saloney' has a serene appeal to it with no Western adulteration whatsoever. While Javed Akhtar's lyrics here are simple and effective, singing by Sohail Sen and Pamela Jain is heartfelt as well that makes it the kind of number which fits in perfectly well with the setting of Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey.

If you have caught the promo of Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey, you would have heard the 'Vande Mataram' piece that goes in the background. Full fledged version of this song is heard here with the words being translated from Sanskrit to Hindi. Cine Singers Association Chorus Group delivers quite well in this high energy track that should add on to the momentum that visuals are expected to create in this action-drama affair. A much shorter version of 'Vande Mataram' appears later in the album with just strings doing a good enough job to keep the composition flowing.

From this point on, the album is entirely made of instrumental tracks which have mainly been set for different moods in the film. 'Long Live Chittagong' carries the exuberance of Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey with a feel good factor to it that enlivens the proceedings. The longest of them all is 'The Teenagers Whistle' which again picks up from the title track Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey and makes one suspect if the sound of whistle would be a code call for the teenage revolutionaries in the film.

A pensive mood is created soon after with 'Surjya's Sorrow' and the way Sohail Sen brings flute, strings and chorus together, it does manage to make an impact. There is an instant shift in mood soon after with 'The Escape', as is expected from the theme, picking on pace and moving ahead quite rapidly. Last to arrive is 'Revolutionary Comrades' which starts off on a slow note with the sound of 'Yeh Des Hai Mera', continues to gain momentum and turn ferocious in his last one minute. Expect some dramatic fireworks at the juncture in the narrative when it appears.

Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey is a good quality album which, as stated above, needs multiple hearing from audience before it settles in entirely. An album like this is different from what is being churned out week after week and since it belongs to an era gone by, it further needs to gain a solid platform for itself before it consolidates its position. While majority of album is situational - whether songs or theme pieces - and does register an impact in each of the tracks, the ones that should find instant attention are the title track 'Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey' and 'Naiyn Tere'. Later, as the film manages a standing at the box office, 'Yeh Des Hai Mera' and 'Sapne Salone' could also find an audience building over in the long run.

Raavan - Movie Review

Cast :: Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Vikram, Govinda, Manisha Koirala, Ravi Kishan, Nikhil Dwivedi, Tejaswini Kolhapure

Here comes the biggest release of Indian film industry and it’s really a greatest show as Manirathnam would definitely never let any down now. We have interesting excerpts of review for Manirathnam’s upcoming film ‘Raavan’ slated to hit screens tomorrow. This isn’t a full-fledged review as we don’t want to reveal the complete status and break down your expectation levels.

Firstly, it’s all about Vikram, who just overshadows everyone over the screens in spite of Abhishek Bacchan donning the lead character. May be Aishwarya Rai was good at certain levels and the films that established her in a completely amazing manner were few. You can easily point them out like ‘Iruvar’, ‘Guru’ and ‘Jodha Akbar’. Undoubtedly, the actress sweeps out every films and establishes her in a newer way.

The film revolves around three characters: Beera (Abhishek Bachchan), Ragini (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) and Dev Pratap Sharma (Vikram).

Despites every conflict of opposition, Dev – a righteous cop and Raghini – a classical dancer get married. Soon they move together to the deep-rooted region of Lal Maati, a rural town in North India. This place has no regards for the police and court law, but in the hands of Beera (Abhishek Bacchan). Being a man with his own principles and handling the issues down his way (partially based on Maoist groups), he has no problems until Dev Pratap Sharma enters his way. On a mission to put an end to Beera’s realms, Dev tears the things down as it leads to unexpected twists with shocking and surprising turns.

Broken down in spirits as his happiness is completely lost through his close blood relation, it’s turn for him to retaliate. It is just as you expected as Beera kidnaps Raghini only to find the justice in his own way.

But then, things are completely gonna be different as the journey that upholds in second hour with more characters involved in this drama will surely entertain you with a different dimension.

We have a small notice for the audiences, who have decided to watch the film. Before watching it, do not expect Manirathnam to go by the customary features.

At the end, there will nothing define as who was wrong and who was right? It is just as it happened with Akira Kurusowa’s. The ultimate decision about the right judgment lies in the hands of no one, but you. Might be for the situation, there may be few debates popping up sooner after the show is over as few people may advocate for Beera, while others Raghini and Dev.

Unlike other films, it’s best to make few points on the technical aspects. This is outstanding and you could have guessed it just with the list of the technicians. First of all, Manirathnam’s ability to shoot major portion of the film besides, inner and nearby locations of waters has to be appreciation. The backdrops of locations maybe different, but the continuities have been strictly followed as audiences may not feel the difference anywhere.

In fact, the story’s proceedings are mostly happening over there. You would not have found any sequences related to an unexpected character proposing the ladylove in water. Yes, the scene where Abhishek Bachchan expresses his love for Aishwarya between the waters is simply superb and for sure there are possibilities of audiences keeping quiet with shock or may freak out raising for applauses.

For the performance, Abhishek Bachchan is exposed in a completely different manner from Manirathnam’s previous films Yuva and Guru. Try to grasp on his performance of Aishwarya Rai, the victim trying to attack him and yet he reciprocates with a different gesture. But the man who steals the show is South Indian actor Chiyaan Vikram. He is fit and more perfect and this one does not look like debut film in Hindi. He is so well versed with dialogues. His introduction is not as formal as it happens with his previous Tamil films.

When it comes to dialogues, Aishwarya Rai gets more footage just as she emotes well wedged between confusions on finalizing her life’s way.

The supporting actors like Ravi Kissan and Priyamani (one of the important characters in this film) have done the best performances. But some of the conversations pertaining between every character look like a stage play. Vikram’s body language speaks more than his dialogues while Govinda has got far away from those clownery acts. Every character has its own definitions and conclusions as director Manirathnam does justice to the roles he has designed.

More than songs, the background score by A.R. Rahman will surely receive more welcome as the musician has well performed enhancing the breathtaking shots of Santhosh Sivan. But it’s weird to see that Manirathnam’sGURU’ climax shot of freeze-and-frame is used at more sequence. For exemplification, the ‘KATA KATA’ has similar shot that causes a sort of pain in the neck. It could have been done even without it. Sreekar Prasad’s editing is crisp as before as he doesn’t try anything new. But the best of all picturing is 'BEHNE DE' that has everything superb - music, camera, lyrics and performing levels of actors.

There are some emotional criteria involving Abhishek Bachchan and Priyamani and their heart-binding scenes at certain portions will attract the audiences of all centres.

On the whole, Raavan is a great movie at Indian standards that will be regarded as the best flicks of contemporary period.

Raavan - Music Review

Cast :: Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Vikram, Govinda, Manisha Koirala, Ravi Kishan, Nikhil Dwivedi, Tejaswini Kolhapure

Raavan is an upcoming Hindi movie of Bollywood starting with Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Vikram in the direction of Mani Ratnam. A. R. Rahman is the music director of the movie. Music of the movie is launched on 24th April, 2010. Raavan will hit Indian cinemas on 18th June, 2010. Lyricist of the film is Gulzar.

Behene De” song of Raavan music is sung by Karthik and Mohammed Irfan. The song tunes on very slow-paced Nagara music. The song has clap music on mix voices lyric. Lyric of the song is very fast on its thematic music. Resembling the style of Taj Mahal’s Kuliridhu is a massive advantage, even as it takes many fascinating turns mid-way. Karthik is in dazzling form in this track!

Ranjha Ranjha” song of Raavan Album is sung by Rekha Bhardwaj and Javed Ali. The song also tunes on slow-paced band music. Lyric of the song is inspired by folk songs. The song has introduced a poetic lyric just like “Behene De” song. Javed Ali’s polished vocals, some scintillating interludes and sheer lyrical drama by Gulzar – this is a clear winner

Kata Kata” song of Raavan Hindi music is sung by Ila Arun, Sapna Awasthi and Kunal Ganjawala. Music and lyric of the song is very similar to “Behene De”. Lyric of the song is very different from all songs. “Kata Kata” soundtrack of Raavan Hindi Album tunes on a very different Nagara music and folk lyric. Kata kata, is a euphoric victory, but; immediately catchy and hummable, with enough mind-boggling layers hidden to unravel on multiple listens. Mani, as always, continues to bring the best out of Rahman

Beera Beera” song of Raavan 2010 music is sung by Vijay Prakash and Mustafa Kutoane. The song also tunes on Nagara music. Lyric of the song is also inspired by folk songs. Music of the song tunes on band instrument. “Beera Beera” is the most popular song of Raavan 2010 Album. Beera, in true Rahman style, takes a spirited, free-flowing life of its own; the energizing tune.

Khilli Re” song of Raavan music is sung by Reena Bhardwaj. The song tunes on very slow-paced instrumental music. Lyric of the song creates a beautiful scene of romance and love. Lyric of the song is just lie a poem.

Thok De Killi” song of Raavan music is sung by Sukhwinder Singh and Am'Nico. The song is very different from all soundtracks of Raavan Album. Lyric of the song tunes on very fast track just like its music. Thok di killi’s exotic sounds and energy have it in great stead even beyond those occasionally predictable Arabic’esque phases, thanks in large doses to the energizer bunny-level liveliness of Sukhwinder Singh. The way it ends, in almost a frenzy, is a nice touch

Overall, all songs of Raavan music have introduced something different. Music and lyrics of all soundtracks of Raavan music are appreciating. Music director of the Raavan - A. R. Rahman again has proved his talent to introduce some rhythmic and unique music in this film. Raavan music is the best creation of A. R. Rahman after Slumdog Millionaire and Delhi 6 music. A. R. Rahman has tried to introduce his creativity and experiment with Tribal music and folk lyric in Raavan music.

Paa - Movie Review

Cast:: Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Amol Atre, Vidya Balan, Paresh Rawal

Can you ever imagine watching an Amitabh Bachchan film and not watching Amitabh Bachchan in it? Seems impossible, isn't it? The towering persona and the rich baritone just cannot be overlooked. But R. Balki transforms the legendary actor into Auro, replaces the rich baritone with the voice of an adolescent [who's neither grown up, nor a kid] and taps the hitherto untapped talent of the icon.

Trust me, 10 minutes into the film and you forget you're watching Amitabh Bachchan. For, Auro takes over the moment he is introduced to the viewer.

PAA is a simple film told in the most simplistic manner and that's one of the prime reasons why this film works big time. The emotions would've fallen flat had the writing been sub-standard or the execution of the material been humdrum or the actors been inferior. But, thankfully, PAA scores in all three departments, although it must be said that the entire slum redevelopment episode is a complete put-off.

Yet, all said and done, PAA is an outstanding film. A film for every paa, every maa... for everyone with a heart. Take a bow, Auro!

Auro (Amitabh Bachchan) is an intelligent, witty 13-year-old boy with an extremely rare genetic defect that causes accelerated ageing. He suffers from progeria. Mentally, he is 13, very normal, but physically he looks five times older.

Inspite of his condition, Auro is a happy boy. He lives with his mother Vidya (Vidya Balan), a gynaecologist, but is completely clueless of his father's identity. Till he meets him, Amol (Abhishek Bachchan), who is a full of ideals politician.

Okay, let's not disrespect Balki by calling PAA a rip-off of THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON or JACK. It's not! PAA looks at the varied relationships so minutely. It may've been publicized as a father-sonfilm, but the women - mother and granny - play equally pivotal parts.

The first hour of PAA grips you in patches. The introduction of Auro is brilliant, but the moment the story focuses on the politician and his arch rival's sub-plot, it goes off-track. Sure, there are some interesting sequences, but the impact isn't mesmeric.

But the post-interval portions take the film to dizzy heights and camouflages the defects. The father-son bonding and the penultimate 25 minutes raise the bar. The emotional quotient is tremendous. Get ready to overhear a lot of sniffs and see a lot of moist eyes once the lights are switched on.

Note the two sequences in the climax, when Auro reveals what his father's first mistake was and the pheras towards the end. Also recall the scene when the girl Auro detests for a certain reason shows up with a sketch of Auro. It moves you completely.

But let's not mistaken PAA to be a rona-dhona movie. It's a positive film with funny/light moments in plenty. The conversation between Auro and his best friend, on various occasions, are superb. Also, not once does PAA show Auro as 'different'. He's one among the kids and there's no discrimination whatsoever, which is remarkable.

Director R. Balki deserves a salute for thinking out of the box and also presenting Amitabh Bachchan like never before. The writing may be erratic, but his handling of the emotional moments is exemplary. Note this, he would be a force to reckon with after PAA. Ilaiyaraaja's music is soothing. P.C. Sreeram's cinematography is incredible.

It would be a blunder if one missed out the contribution of the makeup artists. Transforming the veteran actor into a kid must've been an arduous task and Christien Tinsley and Domini Till deserve to be complimented for making Auro look so real.

Now to the performances! No amount of praise, no amount of adjectives and personifications would do justice to Amitabh Bachchan's performance as Auro. Sure, the icon has enthralled us with superlative performances in his four-decade career, but PAA is something else. The icon keeps surprising you at regular intervals and PAA is one of those beautiful surprises, which will remain etched in your memory forever.

That doesn't mean that the remaining performances get dwarfed by Auro. Sure, PAA belongs to Auro, but not once does Abhishek Bachchan dither from his position or seems less inferior. This is the hallmark of a tremendous actor, which Abhishek is. Vidya is another surprise of PAA. She takes giant strides as an actor and proves yet again that given the right roles, she can match up to the best in the business.

Paresh Rawal is effective. Arundhati Naag is amazing. So is the kid, Pratik, enacting the role of Auro's best buddy. His telephonic conversation with Auro is superb. Jaya Bachchan's presence is lovely.

On the whole, PAA is an amazing experience. It makes you realize two things. One, the Hindi film industry is also capable of narrating fresh stories. Two, Amitabh Bachchan is truly the most accomplished actor this side of the Atlantic.

Talking from the business point of view, PAA has been made in a sensible and reasonable budget (approx. Rs. 17 crores, including P & A expenses), which should easily be recovered from multiplexes alone.

In the final tally, here's a film that should win awards (for Auro) and also box-office rewards, given its low costs. A film that should strike a chord with every paa, maa... just about everyone with a heart!

Big B invites SRK and Aamir at Premiere of Paa

The Bachchans have decided to screen their special film "Paa" in a special way. Premiere of the show will be held in a children's nursery. However the plan to have Big B dress up in his character Arro has been scrapped as the director felt it was unnecessary to call the make up artist all the way from LA to India. Moreover he didn't want the attention of the movie to be shifted to Amitabh Bachchan.

Amitabh Bachchan has personally invited the two Khans of the industry- SRK and Aamir Khan for the premiere and has confirmed the news of their appearance at the event, himself in his blog.Big B has called Aamir to discuss with him both the movies-Paa and 3 Idiots. Seems like Big B and Aamir have joined the mutual admiration club.Aamir Khan openly promoted Paa. The star went on to say that Paa was a unique and different concept and that the promos caught his attention. He was also amazed with work done on Amitabh Bachchan's character."The audiences today believe in unique and intellectual cinema, and I know Paa will cater to their needs.” he concluded. On the other hand Shahrukh khan did not praised the movie openly

Paa directed by Balki tells the story of a 12 year old Auro played by Amitabh Bachchan who suffers from a rare genetic disorder Progeria. Abhishek Bachchan and Vidya Balan play the role of Auro's parents. What is interesting is the role reversal of the real life father son duo in the movie. The movie is the second production of Big B's home production house ABCL.

Paa - Music Review

Cast:: Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Amol Atre, Vidya Balan, Paresh Rawal

"Paa" is a film with an unusual story and music maestro Ilayaraja has composed tunes that gel well with the movie's subject. Director R. Balakrishnan’s film stars Amitabh Bachchan as Abhishek's son Auro, who suffers from progeria that causes premature ageing. It also stars Vidya Balan.

The album begins with ‘Mudhi mudhi ittefaq se’. Crooned by Shilpa Rao, it has an instant connect. It is melodious but not very long. The song is currently doing the rounds on television channels and has become a hit.

‘Mudhi mudhi ittefaq se’ has two more versions - ‘Udhi udhi’, an extension of the original and ‘Gali mudhi’ that has vocals by Shaan. It is slower in pace but equally nice.

Next is ‘Halke se bol’. It is a children’s song and has a chorus behind the mike. It starts without background music and later musical arrangements are introduced. This too is short in length and is an average number.

Up next is ‘Hichki hichki’, more of a situational number that doesn’t impress too much. The fast-paced track has been sung by Sunidhi Chauhan.

It is followed by the title track ‘Mere paa’ by Amitabh Bachchan himself. It’s more of a narration in the voice of a child than a proper song. The theme song is very endearing.

Finally there is ‘Gumm summ gumm’ sung by the composer’s daughter Bavatharini with ample support from the chorus. The song has influences of jazz and is a good hear.

On the whole, the album of ‘Paa’ is not conventional and will appeal to music buffs. But most songs will get an edge with the visuals.

No Hrithik or Abhishek yet for ‘Agneepath’ remake: Karan Johar

Mumbai, There have been speculations about who will play the male lead in the remake of the 1990 hit “Agneepath”. While the names of Hrithik Roshan and Abhishek Bachchan popped up, filmmaker Karan Johar clarifies that no one has been finalised to play the part Amitabh Bachchan immortalised in the original.

“I haven’t made any statement whatsoever around the man who would eventually be playing the role of Vijay Dinanath Chauhan that was made
iconic by Mr. Amitabh Bachchan. All I have said is that, yes, we are going ahead with a remake of ‘Agneepath’ and that’s about it,” Johar told IANS.

Whether it is Hrithik, Abhishek or someone else, Johar must be having a wish list?

“Well, the wish list is to get the screenplay right. For the moment nothing else is more important than that,” he said.

Even though the film is being produced under the banner of Dharma Productions, Johar won’t be going behind the camera for the movie.

“True, I would be stepping aside and the film would be directed by Karan Malhotra, who has assisted me on ‘My Name Is Khan’. That’s the only thing which has been finalised… everything else you hear is mere speculation. We will finalise the cast once the script is locked. Currently, it is still in the process of being written,” he added.

Malhotra is not really a novice when it comes to filmmaking. He has earlier worked as an assistant director with Ashutosh Gowariker on “Jodhaa Akbar”, Farah Khan on “Main Hoon Na”, Farhan Akhtar on “Lakshya” and Raj Kumar Santoshi “Lajja and Pukar” amongst others.

Since it is close to two decades since the release of “Agneepath”, would the remake have a different milieu to it?

“Certainly! We are adapting the film from the original, but ours would be a new age version that would fit in well with today’s time. We really hope that we are able to do justice to the original and make the remake exciting for today’s generation,” Johar said.

Dharma Productions, meanwhile, has as many as seven films that are in different stages of production. These are “My Name Is Khan”, “Wake Up Sid”, “Kurbaan”, “Koochie Koochie Hota Hai”, remakes of Hollywood flick “Stepmom” and “Agneepath” and “I Hate Love Stories”.

How is he managing it all?

“Believe me, it’s not difficult at all. All you have to do is to follow a three-point mantra – delegation, outsourcing and trust. Along with that, if you have the right vision and infrastructure in place, which we do have in Dharma Productions, it isn’t difficult to crack it all.

“That’s the way you manage things and I have been fortunate enough to have a team with which it has become possible to helm a number of projects at the same time,” said Johar.

Among the seven films, three are ready to hit the screens.

“‘Wake Up Sid’ is all set to arrive on Oct 2. ‘Kurbaan’ will come in late November. Other than that, we are looking at an early 2010 release for ‘My Name Is Khan’. Yes, these have been busy and really exciting times,” the filmmaker said.
