Hum Tum Aur Ghost - Movie Review
Cast :: Arshad Warsi, Dia Mirza, Sandhya Mridul, Boman IraniIt is often said, interesting ideas don't necessarily translate into enthralling celluloid experiences. That's what I realized, for the umpteenth time, as HUM TUM AUR GHOST concluded.
Hollywood has attempted several films wherein the living has been shown interacting with the dead. In fact, two decades ago, there was a mad rush to Indianize GHOST [Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, Whoopi Goldberg]. The fascination with the dead continues to haunt Bollywood to this date.
Arshad Warsi - who has been credited with the story of HUM TUM AUR GHOST - has denied that the film is inspired by GHOST TOWN. Yet, there're some similarities and that could be coincidental. So far, so good!
Now here's the hitch. The screenplay - the lifeline of any film - is what makes a film stand on its feet and in this case, HUM TUM AUR GHOST suffers due to inept writing. Ideally, the writers and director should've come to the point right away, but the film takes its own sweet time to come to the point and what comes across is also not enticing, barring a couple of attention-grabbing moments. By then, the viewer has already lost interest in the film.
The sole saving grace is the performances by the principal cast. Sadly, that's not enough!
For Armaan [Arshad Warsi], life was picture perfect. He has a doting girlfriend Gehna [Dia Mirza] and also a great job. But there's a problem: Armaan hears voices. Voices that torture him. Voices that disturb him. More importantly, voices that nobody else can hear.
Gehna is irritated with his weird behaviour. Add to that her father [Javed Sheikh] constantly berates him for his fondness for the bottle. No one seems to understand his predicament. What puzzles everyone is the fact that he talks to himself… or rather, he talks to people, who no one can see, simply because they don't live.
Soon, Armaan becomes aware of his special ability to connect with the dead. Equipped with a will to fulfil the wishes of these spirits who hound him, Armaan sets out on a mission to help out three souls - a child, an old man and a young woman.
Generally, most Hindi movies come to the point at the very inception. HUM TUM AUR GHOST also opens its cards at the very outset, but loses focus soon after. In fact, the moment you're told that Arshad can see the dead, you expect to embark on a journey you've never embarked upon earlier. But there's hardly any movement in the story after a captivating start.
No doubt, the concept is fascinating and had the writers concentrated on tackling the three stories that Arshad chooses to solve, and without wasting time on romance-n-songs, HUM TUM AUR GHOST would've been one journey you would've never forgotten.
The build-up to the first story - a dead kid asking Arshad to help his father - is simply missing. The second story - involving Boman Irani - could've been tackled far more expertly. The entire sequence in the bank is bizarre and far from funny. In fact, you wonder, did the writers run out of ideas at this point? Of course, the sequence thereafter - between Boman and his wife [Asawari Joshi] - is touching.
The third story - of a woman in search of her son - starts off very well, but midway through this story, the moment Arshad enters his father's house, the mystery never remains a mystery. You can predict what's in store next. The culmination to the film, although well shot, doesn't make the required impact either.
Director Kabeer Kaushik was entrusted with a great idea, but his team of writers blew it up into smithereens. The impact generated by a few worthy of note sequences gets evaporated as the film reaches its culmination, primarily because the writing doesn't hold. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music is strictly okay. Ashok Mehta's cinematography is of top quality.
HUM TUM AUR GHOST has skilled performances, starting with Arshad, who's likable and believable. A complete natural, this is among his finest works. It's a new Dia you get to watch in this film. Not only does she look ethereal, but is exceptional in the acting department as well. Boman is tremendous, especially in the sequence when he's meeting his wife again. Sandhya Mridul doesn't get much to do. Zehra Naqvi is convincing. Shernaz Patel is wasted. Ditto for Tinnu Anand. Javed Sheikh is as usual. Asawari Joshi is perfect for her part.
On the whole, HUM TUM AUR GHOST is a terrible waste of a terrific idea. Disappointing!

Hum Tum Aur Ghost - Music Review
Cast :: Arshad Warsi, Dia Mirza, Sandhya Mridul, Boman IraniHum Tum Aur Ghost is an extremely shady title for a movie. It was formerly named Kaun Bola? but lead actor and producer Arshad Warsi thought that name sounded ‘tapori’.
Anyway, HTG is produced by Arshad and wife Maria Goretti. It stars Dia Mirza, Boman Irani and Sandhya Mridul in prominent roles. The story is about a fashion photographer who can communicate with souls that haven’t crossed over and portrays how, in the process of helping three lost souls, he ends up finding himself.
Now the music of this film is composed by fab-trio Shankar-Ehsaan and Loy, who are arguably Bollywood’s most-consistent musical team at the peak of their powers. The album opens with the already-aired Dekho Raste Mein which portrays the chemistry between the lead pair. The track is melodious and sweet, setting just the right tone for the album.
In complete contrast, the title track Hum Tum Aur Ghost is bold and loud with marching percussion and blaring electric guitars. Vishal Dadlani teams up with Shankar Mahadevan to give this track a nice desi-rock feel with a catchy chorus. It falls short of the dance-floor but its remix makes up for that.
The tempo stays upbeat for another energetic track in Banware Se Pooche Banwariya. I was surprised to see Maria Goretti’s name in the contributing artists. This one’s another foot-tapping, ‘tapori-style’ experimental track which deserved its own remix.
The shining gem of this album is Kal Tum The Yahaan, a serene love ballad with more meaning in its lyrics than the entire album combined. It’s sung brilliantly by Caralisa Monteiro and Shankar Mahadevan. This one’s as beautiful as they come.
One gaping flaw was including remix tracks of Dekho Raste Meinand Kal Tum The Yahaan. Both tracks are amazing ballads and adding electro beats to it only takes away the seriousness from calm, serene tracks.
Extremely digestible seven tracks out of which five deserve a listen. The music has the potential to do well, if promoted well.

Dia Mirza missed Cristiano Ronaldo by a blink of an eye!!!
When Bipasha Basu met footballer Cristiano Ronaldo at a party a few years ago, she managed to kiss him. However, Dia Mirza walk passed him a few days ago yet could not meet him, forget about kissing him. 
It happened in New Castle, UK, where Dia was shooting for her film “Hum Tum Aur Ghost”. The actress, after her shoot, walked straight to her room,while on a call, not realising that the Real Madrid star was sitting in the lobby of the building. In fact, she was shocked when her entourage asked her if she met the footballer, who was in the lobby waiting for one of his friends.
Ronaldo had already left by the time Dia reached the lobby to meet him.
She has been his huge fan for a long time and follows almost every game he plays. She said that it was her loss, as she has been dreaming to meet him. She added that she had missed a golden opportunity.

Filmfare organizers who are busy for the grand day of Saturday which will see the best performances of 2009 being awarded with prestigious Filmfare lady, threw a pre-event party at Mumbai’s JW Marriott yesterday to celebrate the nominations. The night also saw designer Manish Malhotra showcasing his creations whose showstoppers were director Imtiaz Ali and actress Kalki Koechlin.

Bollywood actress and former Miss Asia Pacific Dia Mirza recently got a marriage proposal from stalker. The ardent admirer of the actress is in his early 30s and has been chasing the actress for six long years.
The man who is a doctor by profession, came up to Dia Mirza's residence a day after her birthday and asked her to marry him and also had an engagement ring and a card with him.
Dia Mirza was so shocked at this that she called her servant and driver for help. The actress has also lodged a police complaint against the stalker at the Khar Police station.
Kurbaan - Movie Review
Cast :: Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Sunil Shetty, Dia Mirza, Om Puri, Kirron Kher.Post 9/11, there's anger, distrust, suspicion, discomfort all around. Not a day passes when you don't hear of terrorists killing civilians in the name of religion.
Many storytellers have, in the past, narrated stories about terrorists and their evil and wicked plans. But let me state one thing categorically. You haven't watched a more profound, a more thought-provoking, a more dramatic story on this subject before KURBAAN. It's not just the most powerful film to come out of Dharma Productions, it's the most powerful film to come out of the Hindi film industry this year, thus far.
KURBAAN tries to penetrate into the psyche of not just the terrorist, but also someone who has been a helpless spectator all this while. This film is sure to spark off discussions and debates, although it must also be noted that it doesn't take sides or gets preachy.
Rensil D'Silva has chosen a burning issue for his directorial debut, which is a complete departure from Karan Johar's earlier films. For some inexplicable reasons, parallels are being drawn with FANAA and NEW YORK , but the fact remains that barring the backdrop of terrorism, there's no similarity with those films.
One often felt that certain films are beyond box-office. Movies are not meant to merely entertain, but enlighten and educate as well. They need to prick your conscience and in the process, make an attempt to make this world a better place. KURBAAN does just that and for this very reason, it deserves a double thumbs up.
Final word? Drop everything else you're doing to watch KURBAAN. Movies like these need to be made, encouraged and lauded.
Avantika (Kareena Kapoor) is a teacher at a university in Delhi. She has come back from New York where she teaches, because her father (Aakash Khurana) has suffered a heart attack. During this period, she meets a Professor called Ehsaan Khan (Saif Ali Khan). Soon, they begin seeing each other and love blossoms.
A few months later, Avantika receives a call from her university in New York, asking her to come back. Avantika breaks the news to Ehsaan. He, in turn, tells her he doesn't mind coming to the States with her. But first they need to get married.
Soon after the marriage, they leave to start a new life in New York. They buy a house in an Indian neighbourhood and move in. Just as they are setting up home, their conservative Muslim neighbours invite them over for dinner. The next morning, Salma (Nauheed Cyrusi), one of the women Avantika met the night before at the dinner, visits her under the pretext of gifting her sweets.
When Avantika invites her in, Salma tells her that she is in grave danger. Nothing is what it seems. Salma pleads with Avantika to help her. What follows next is a series of incidents that sucks Avantika into a vortex of danger and intrigue. As her life spirals out of control, Avantika realizes that she is a pawn in a huge game.
KURBAAN has two stories running concurrently - the love story between Saif and Kareena and the story of Islamic terrorists. Rensil sets the stage in the initial 15 minutes itself, after which there's a twist in the tale every 15-20 minutes, which catches you completely unaware. Rensil doesn't borrow from the past, which makes the proceedings thoroughly captivating.
The highpoint is the 35-minute climax, which leaves you spellbound. The culmination to the story shakes you completely, largely because it's pragmatic and has been executed most logically as well. In fact, filming the climax at the various underground tube stations must've been the toughest challenge for the director.
On the flip side, KURBAAN caters more to the intelligentsia or the thinking viewer and might not be lapped up whole-heartedly by those who survive on the staple diet of masala fares.
Some of the finest technicians in the business are associated with KURBAAN. Hemant Chaturvedi's cinematography is super. The film bears an international look all through. Salim-Sulaiman's music is well integrated in the narrative. At least two tracks merit a mention - 'Shukran Allah' and 'Ali Maula'. Anurag Kashyap and Niranjan Iyengar's dialogue are superb. The lines enhance the impact of several sequences. Thrills are, again, in sync with the mood of the film.
KURBAAN is embellished with superlative performances. Saif is extra-ordinary in a role that only proves his versatility once again. If he won your heart with a winning performance in LOVE AAJ KAL a few months ago, you need to watch this supremely talented actor underplay his part so beautifully in KURBAAN. As for Kareena, KURBAAN reiterates one fact yet again: She's the best in the business. No two opinions on that! Watch her get those emotional sequences right, it's incredible. Here's a performance that truly merits the highest praise and admiration, besides fetching her awards and accolades.
Vivek Oberoi is fantastic. Matching Saif and Kareena at every step, KURBAAN should be the turning point in Vivek's career. It's a difficult role to portray and only an actor with a wide range could've portrayed this part so effectively. Om Puri is top notch and so is Kirron Kher. Kirron is marvellous, especially in the penultimate scene. Dia Mirza, Nauheed Cyrusi and Kulbhushan Kharbanda lend credibility to their brief roles.
On the whole, KURBAAN is the most powerful film to come out of the Hindi film industry in 2009, so far. The film has a captivating plot, gripping screenplay, super performances and a climax that shakes you up completely. Watching this movie should be on top of your agenda this week.

Kurbaan - Music Review
Cast :: Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Sunil Shetty, Dia Mirza, Om Puri, Kirron Kher.The music of Dharma Productions’ latest offering, Kurbaan, based on Jihad is an album to watch out for. The movie has generated quite some buzz off late thanks to a picture of Kareena and Saif.
With Niranjan Iyegar choosing the curve of the alphabets in his way and Salim-Sulaiman providing the notes to his thought-spinners, the result is mesmerizing. The album has some of the best Sufi tracks composed in recent times.
The album which starts on high notes concludes with a disappointing title track. But the remaining 4 tracks are of high caliber. Niranjan Iyengar and Salim-Sulaiman have written/composed the perfect album for a movie like Kurbaan.
Shukran Allah
Song from Sonu Nigam is always a delight. But equal credits to Salim and Shreya Ghosal for their beautiful playback singing. Song moves in a smooth rhythm, you will love the sounds of guitar.
Dua
Sukhwinder Singh and Kailash Kher comes together again after disappointing last effort. But this time it works. The main USP of this song is it's lyrics. Very clear and meaningful.
Ali Maula
Ali Maula picks up a bit slow but turns out to be magnificent song. Backed by powerful music, reckoning song for singer and music composer Salim.
Rasiya
It's more of a theme song for Kurbaan. Again strong music raises the tempo of this song.
Kurbaan Hua
The show stealer for sure. This is a Hindi rock song from talented rock music experts Vishal - Shekhar. This type of songs do tend to sound similar but it has unique touch comparable to no other song.
Ali Maula - Remix
This was not required, music is too loud and suppress the singers voice. Remix of Kurbaan Hua would have been better.

Dia Mirza graces two magazine covers this month
Though Dia Mirza’s career is not really going through the best of its phase, there is no denying the fact that she is one of those rare Bollywood beauties who have a perfect face, perfect complexion and a perfect figure. This month Dia exudes her beauty on the covers of two magazines. One is the cover of Jade Magazine - Run way to life for the month of July 2009 and the other one is for Marie Clarie where she appears wearing a green Roberto Cavalli on the cover. Dia tells Marie Claire that she’s doing some half a dozen movies with a plethora of offbeat roles. She reveals that that there’s Kaun Bola with Arshad Warsi, Acid Factory, Kisaan, Johnny Mastana with Rensil D’Silva, Alibaug and Fruit & Nut with Cyrus Brocha & Boman Irani.

Diya Mirza Handich or Dia Mirza nicknamed Dee was born on 9 December 1981 in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. This young woman has one of the most beautiful, smiling and innocent looking face in Bollywood and is also caring, sensitive, and loving.
The introverted Diya entered the Femina Miss India, held on 2 December, 2000, in Manila when she was 18 to have some fun. She walked away with 3 titles – Miss Beautiful Smile, The Sony Viewers’ Choice Award and Femina Miss India-Asia Pacific. She is the second Indian contestant to be crowned Miss Asia Pacific and the first in 29 years. Thats was the started of her career as a model.
She made her Bollywood debut with Rehna Hai Tera Dil Mein. Though the film was not a major Bollywood hit Diya was love by her fans and her acting skills were also praised by the critics. Diya did not get any chance to star in any major hit movie but she proved her acting talents in films like Tehzeeb, Tumsa Nahin Dekha, Alag etc.
But acting is not the only thing Diya is skilled at. This lady also has a keen sense os Business. She was earning Rs. 5000 a month plus 15% commission on any ad revenve she fetched as the Marketing Executive of Sriven Multitech in Hyderabad when she was only 16 years of age!
She never really had a great run in the film industry and at one point of time she got so frustrated that she wanted to give it all up. She was quoted as saying – “I realized that the minute your film flops those producers who are keen to sign you make an excuse and back out at the last minute. You are dropped from the film. Sometimes the film is announced in a lavish way but does not take off. I got tired of all this and thought of seriously giving up my career once and for all. But then I realized that things were not so bad for me after all. Filmmakers respected me! Few have shown genuine interest to cast me in their films. And that is what has kept me going." The introverted Diya entered the Femina Miss India, held on 2 December, 2000, in Manila when she was 18 to have some fun. She walked away with 3 titles – Miss Beautiful Smile, The Sony Viewers’ Choice Award and Femina Miss India-Asia Pacific. She is the second Indian contestant to be crowned Miss Asia Pacific and the first in 29 years. Thats was the started of her career as a model.
She made her Bollywood debut with Rehna Hai Tera Dil Mein. Though the film was not a major Bollywood hit Diya was love by her fans and her acting skills were also praised by the critics. Diya did not get any chance to star in any major hit movie but she proved her acting talents in films like Tehzeeb, Tumsa Nahin Dekha, Alag etc.
But acting is not the only thing Diya is skilled at. This lady also has a keen sense os Business. She was earning Rs. 5000 a month plus 15% commission on any ad revenve she fetched as the Marketing Executive of Sriven Multitech in Hyderabad when she was only 16 years of age!
She never really had a great run in the film industry and at one point of time she got so frustrated that she wanted to give it all up. She was quoted as saying – “I realized that the minute your film flops those producers who are keen to sign you make an excuse and back out at the last minute. You are dropped from the film. Sometimes the film is announced in a lavish way but does not take off. I got tired of all this and thought of seriously giving up my career once and for all. But then I realized that things were not so bad for me after all. Filmmakers respected me! Few have shown genuine interest to cast me in their films. And that is what has kept me going."
