Hum Tum Aur Ghost - Movie Review
Cast :: Arshad Warsi, Dia Mirza, Sandhya Mridul, Boman IraniIt is often said, interesting ideas don't necessarily translate into enthralling celluloid experiences. That's what I realized, for the umpteenth time, as HUM TUM AUR GHOST concluded.
Hollywood has attempted several films wherein the living has been shown interacting with the dead. In fact, two decades ago, there was a mad rush to Indianize GHOST [Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, Whoopi Goldberg]. The fascination with the dead continues to haunt Bollywood to this date.
Arshad Warsi - who has been credited with the story of HUM TUM AUR GHOST - has denied that the film is inspired by GHOST TOWN. Yet, there're some similarities and that could be coincidental. So far, so good!
Now here's the hitch. The screenplay - the lifeline of any film - is what makes a film stand on its feet and in this case, HUM TUM AUR GHOST suffers due to inept writing. Ideally, the writers and director should've come to the point right away, but the film takes its own sweet time to come to the point and what comes across is also not enticing, barring a couple of attention-grabbing moments. By then, the viewer has already lost interest in the film.
The sole saving grace is the performances by the principal cast. Sadly, that's not enough!
For Armaan [Arshad Warsi], life was picture perfect. He has a doting girlfriend Gehna [Dia Mirza] and also a great job. But there's a problem: Armaan hears voices. Voices that torture him. Voices that disturb him. More importantly, voices that nobody else can hear.
Gehna is irritated with his weird behaviour. Add to that her father [Javed Sheikh] constantly berates him for his fondness for the bottle. No one seems to understand his predicament. What puzzles everyone is the fact that he talks to himself… or rather, he talks to people, who no one can see, simply because they don't live.
Soon, Armaan becomes aware of his special ability to connect with the dead. Equipped with a will to fulfil the wishes of these spirits who hound him, Armaan sets out on a mission to help out three souls - a child, an old man and a young woman.
Generally, most Hindi movies come to the point at the very inception. HUM TUM AUR GHOST also opens its cards at the very outset, but loses focus soon after. In fact, the moment you're told that Arshad can see the dead, you expect to embark on a journey you've never embarked upon earlier. But there's hardly any movement in the story after a captivating start.
No doubt, the concept is fascinating and had the writers concentrated on tackling the three stories that Arshad chooses to solve, and without wasting time on romance-n-songs, HUM TUM AUR GHOST would've been one journey you would've never forgotten.
The build-up to the first story - a dead kid asking Arshad to help his father - is simply missing. The second story - involving Boman Irani - could've been tackled far more expertly. The entire sequence in the bank is bizarre and far from funny. In fact, you wonder, did the writers run out of ideas at this point? Of course, the sequence thereafter - between Boman and his wife [Asawari Joshi] - is touching.
The third story - of a woman in search of her son - starts off very well, but midway through this story, the moment Arshad enters his father's house, the mystery never remains a mystery. You can predict what's in store next. The culmination to the film, although well shot, doesn't make the required impact either.
Director Kabeer Kaushik was entrusted with a great idea, but his team of writers blew it up into smithereens. The impact generated by a few worthy of note sequences gets evaporated as the film reaches its culmination, primarily because the writing doesn't hold. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music is strictly okay. Ashok Mehta's cinematography is of top quality.
HUM TUM AUR GHOST has skilled performances, starting with Arshad, who's likable and believable. A complete natural, this is among his finest works. It's a new Dia you get to watch in this film. Not only does she look ethereal, but is exceptional in the acting department as well. Boman is tremendous, especially in the sequence when he's meeting his wife again. Sandhya Mridul doesn't get much to do. Zehra Naqvi is convincing. Shernaz Patel is wasted. Ditto for Tinnu Anand. Javed Sheikh is as usual. Asawari Joshi is perfect for her part.
On the whole, HUM TUM AUR GHOST is a terrible waste of a terrific idea. Disappointing!

Priyanka Chopra to host the third season of ‘Fear Factor’
The entertainment channel ‘Colors’ raked in gold with the two seasons of ‘Khatron Ke Khiladi- Fear Factor’, both hosted by Akshay Kumar. However, the channel decided to go for a change this season and as such, this season of KKK will have thirteen Cricketing Khiladis and Ek Haseena. The Haseena here will be none other than the reigning Bollywood queen Priyanka Chopra. The big-ticket reality series, run after the IPL, will have 13 Indian and international cricketers doing the tasks.
Says Colors programming head Ashvini Yardi, “We’re delighted to have Priyanka on-board to host this year’s Fear Factor – ‘Khatron Ke Khiladi.”
“When you combine Priyanka’s glamour, mass-appeal and athleticism with the energy and adrenaline of the cricketers, you get the perfect equation for a show like Fear Factor.

Preeti Sengupta (Tanushree Dutta) is an airhostess living in with her boyfriend Karan Malhotra (Rohit Roy). They share a nice 2BHK apartment in the northern suburbs of Mumbai and are befriended by their elderly neighbor Madhusudan Tanha (Anupam Kher), a struggling poet and lyricist.
When Preeti suspects Karan’s fidelity and throws him out of her apartment, she advertises for a tenant to share her apartment. Enter Neha Bhardwaj (Neetu Chandra), a modest small-town girl asking for accommodation. The two girls soon become close until things begin to go disastrously wrong - slowly and steadily and Neha and Preeti are torn apart by suspicion, deceit and betrayal.

Katrina Kaif collapses on the sets of ‘Tees Maar Khan’
This Wednesday, Katrina Kaif was to shoot at a location of Malshej Ghat for Farah Khan’s ‘Tees Maar Khan’. The actress was done with her makeup and walked on to the location, greeted her co-star Akshay Kumar and director Farah Khan and then it happened…. She collapsed in a heap…just like that!
There was panic and utter chaos at the location for the next three hours, as the medical facilities in Malshej were hardly adequate. Co-star Akshay Kumar quickly called up a doctor from Mumbai and a doctor was rushed to Malshej. However, before the doctor arrived, Katrina revived, though she was still weak. The doctor diagnosed that the collapse was due to over exertion and lack of sleep. He advised rest for Kaif.
Farah suggested they cancel her shooting for the day, but Katrina insisted on shooting in the second-half of the day’s schedule.

Priyanka Chopra received critical acclaims for her varied avatars in ‘Whats Your Rashee?”. Now, bong beauty Bipasha Basu is set to enthrall the audience with her nine different looks in forthcoming ‘Pankh’ produced by Sanjay Gupta’s White Feather Entertainment and directed by Sudipto Chattopadhyay.
The story of ‘Pankh’ revolves around the life of a child actor who grows up thinking he’s a girl. The film is based on a true story of child actor Ashish Channa, who played a pivotal role in Ram Gopal Varma’s ‘Vastu Shashtra’. Ashish’s mother would often pass her off as a boy only to get her to work in smaller and bigger screen.
Talking about the movie, the director says, “I think Pankh is mainly an urban film. The theme that we have touched in this film identifies more with the sensibilities of the urban dwellers. May be in a few rural areas the film might be appealing. But, I have always maintained that this film touches upon a subject that is way different that you see in usual mainstream films.”

Katrina Kaif collapses on Tees Maar Khan sets
Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif has been facing a series of health problem of late. The latest hear is that she collapsed on the sets of Farah Khan’s Tees Maar Khan yesterday (March 17) morning. there was a major rumpus on the sets asKatrina collapsed before the shooting of an important scene at Malshej Ghat.
Akshay called in a doctor from Mumbai. Much to the relief of the cast and crew of the film, the doctor said that the sudden collapse was due to over-work and lack of sleep. Following the incident, Farah suggested that they called off theshooting for the day but Katrina insisted on shooting in the second half of the day.

A source reveals, “Imran has completed the shoot for IHLS and only one song is remaining. Imran’s new look, which is very young and trendy, is quite different from the IHLS look. Now he will be shooting for Break Ke Baad for around three weeks and as soon as his hair grows, he will go back and shoot the last song for Punit’s film.”
Producer of Break ke Baad, Kunal Kohli, confirms, “Karan Johar and Punit were sweet enough to adjust Imran’s dates. Initially, we thought we will shoot with Imran after he completes the song but it gets very hot in Delhi and we also required combined dates of a lot of stars together for our movie.”
He adds, “His hair will grow in a couple of weeks, and he will then shoot the remaining song. It’s just a song, so it is not a big problem for anyone in that case.”Salman Khan’s Support For Preity Zinta’s Kings XI Punjab
“I am supporting Zinta`s team, but I haven`t watched any of the matches as yet,” Salman told reporters at the `mahurat` (inauguration) of Rahul Dholakia`s film “Society” here Tuesday.

Paathshaala - Music Review
Cast :: Shahid Kapoor, Nana Patekar, Ayesha Takia Azmi & Swini KharaComposer Hanif Shaikh and choreographer turned filmmaker Ahmed Khan go back a long way. Hanif had sung 'Yeh Dooriyan' for Ahmed's directorial debut effort Fool and Final. Years after the release of the film, their association has gone to the next level with Hanif writing as well as composing all the five songs in Ahmed Khan's production Paathshaala. With Shahid Kapoor playing a major role in the film, one looks forward to what Hanif has in store for listeners in his first major project.
'Aye Khuda' is as soothing as it gets. A soft number with Western orchestra to it, this Salim Merchant number is an urban number with an Indi-pop touch to it. The kind of number that instantly gets you into the mood and makes you look forward to the album to follow, 'Aye Khuda' is a youthful track and completely in line with what one expects from the soundtrack of a Shahid Kapoor starrer. Barring 'Khushnuma' (which is the next to arrive), each of the tracks in Paathshala has a remix to boast of and the one which accompanies 'Aye Khuda' is no less entertaining.
Arrival of 'Paathshaala - Khushnuma' is most welcome as it is the song with an attitude. An out and out Western track with a club feel to it, this Vishal Dadlani sung track has an extremely arresting beginning to it and gets your neck swinging in no time. Kudos to Hanif Shaikh for coming up with the kind of groovy arrangements that ensure that youth laps up to 'Khushnuma'. Now one looks forward to how the song is picturised for screen.
Lucky Ali is the third to arrive and he makes sure that he has a gala time behind the mike as he gets into a melodious outing with 'Bekarar'. A haunting number which only sounds more and more better with every listening, 'Bekarar' goes perfectly well with the overall mood and setting of the soundtrack of Paathshaala. Going by the title of the film, one would have expected that it would primarily be made of theme songs or some situational numbers. However, a track like 'Bekarar' isn't really dependent on a film and would be enjoyable even if it is heard standalone. No wonder, its 'remix version' is also welcomed with open arms.
For the first time in the album, a female voice is heard and the lucky one is Tulsi Kumar. She is roped in for 'Mujhe Teri', a soft romantic number which she totally enjoys singing. A track which has Hanif Shaikh not just co-composing with Vijay Lama but also lending his voice, 'Mujhe Teri' (which also has added vocals by Akansha Lama) moves on quite seamlessly and adds further variety to Paathshaala. With each of the songs managing to bring in something to the album, it turns out to be an entertaining outing so far.
'Teri Marzi Aye Khuda', though being a slightly pensive outing, is not boring at all. Kailash Kher is the solo singer for this situational track which has an out and out 'hindustani' feel to it. Promising to arrive at a crucial juncture in the film where the graph goes a little downhill (from the story standpoint) 'Teri Marzi Aye Khuda' turns out to be a fairly decent track.
Finally arrives 'Paathshaala - Theme' which begins with the sound of 'Aye Khuda' but soon takes a far more euphoric route with a horde of children coming together and sharing their happiness of attending a 'paathshaala'. A short two minute piece which should form a part of the film's background score, 'Paathshaala - Theme' is a nice way of bringing this album to a close.
Paathshaala is a good album with at least three tracks that carry the potential of being popular in days to come - 'Aye Khuda', 'Bekarar' and 'Khushnuma'. Hanif Shaikh does well in churning out a good first album, both as a composer and lyricist. However, the need of the hour is aggressive promotion of the album which should enable these songs to get their due. With just a month to go for the film's release, couple of dozen films releasing in the interim and IPL going strong, it would take a lot for Paathshaala to be noticed. However, with Shahid Kapoor staring hard from the promos of the film, there are good hopes that this effort from Hanif Shaikh would get noticed.
